Molly stared at the tiny yellow petals. It was the last of its kind. She hoped to preserve the seeds so they could try to grow more in the spring, but it wasn’t going to be easy. Plants were few and far between.
It began with the bees disappearing. No one knew where they went. Slowly, one by one they disappeared until there were no bees to be found. The other pollinators soon followed. The plants weren’t too far behind. They’d tried pollinating the plants themselves but it didn’t work well and they couldn’t keep up. All would have been lost, except for one explorer; Molly.
She’d found one tiny bee in the middle of the jungle. It wasn’t much, but it was guarding a tiny hive with fertilized eggs. Scientists were able to hatch the eggs, growing a new hive and then splitting the hive off until they were able to get several hives. Some of the scientists had saved seeds from the last of the plants, and they’d planted a few, but most had died before going to seed. The tiny petals were their last hope.
