Mind Mapping

Mind Mapping is a way to connect ideas using visual resources.

Mind Mapping can help you write by:

  • Organizing thoughts and ideas.
  • Helping you find and review information quickly.
  • Identify main topics and connect them with smaller pieces.
  • Unjumbling ideas.
  • Connecting and solving problems within a story.
  • Helping you to think more creatively.
  • Creating a flowchart to connect pieces of your writing.
  1. Start with the main idea of your writing. This could be your topic if you are writing non-fiction, or the main idea of your story if you are writing fiction.
  2. Branch out from the center. On each level, add subtopics or subideas that are closely related to the main topic or idea of your writing.
  3. Go out further, branching out from each subtopic. If needed, branch out again. You can lay out important concepts from your non-fiction writing, or use Mind Mapping to connect smaller scenes to the main idea by branching out and adding layers.
  4. Review the diagram. You may find you can add more branches when you see what you already have!
  5. Use your Mind-Map to help you make progress and stay organized as you write.

A free, PDF printable Mind Map is included below.
