Change: Alter something or someone, make it different

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost – Poems | Academy of American Poets

Change is seldom easy.  Whether it’s adjusting from the golden leaves of fall into winter, or the golden buds of spring into hot summer days, change is a constant.  Writing is no different.  After you’ve finished a piece, you’ll need to go back and make changes to edit out your mistakes and make the writing stronger, better.  Here are 7 Tips on editing your writing.

  1. Take a break after you finish a piece and return to it after you’ve had some time away.
  2. Print off a copy.  Use a different font to read through and edit your piece than the font you wrote it in.
  3. Read the writing out loud.  Sometimes you can catch mistakes and needed changes simply by reading the text out loud.  Hearing the words is different from seeing the words.
  4. Use bookmarks, highlighters, icons or symbols, and other tracking methods to help you keep track of where you are at in the editing process.  Edit one sentence at a time, and then go back and read through each paragraph.  Be careful not to spend too much time on grammar and spelling until you know you’ve gotten the writing piece down the way you want it.  Otherwise, you may fix sentences you later delete.
  5. Know your intended audience and put yourself in their shoes.  Read the piece as though you are reading it from their point of view.
  6. Get to the heart of the writing.  This may mean cutting out a lot of extra words, or rewording many sentences to get down to the heart of what you want to write.
  7. Be careful not to over edit.  If you find yourself changing the same sentences over and over again, looking for the “perfect” words, it may be time to move on, or take a break.

Write a poem about the changes autumn brings with it.
