Write until it becomes as natural as breathing. Write until not writing makes you anxious. ~Unknown
More than 10 years ago, I wrote a blog called “How Do You Make Writing a Priority?”
Over a decade later, I can answer that question better than I could back then. In ten years, I may not have published books… yet. But I’ve written more than I ever dreamed possible, and I’ve built habits that will hopefully continue for years to come.
How do you make writing a priority? You make it as natural as breathing. You make writing so much a part of your daily routine that to go without it feels like holding your breath. I can go a day or two without writing, longer if I really had to, but the longer I go without writing now, the more anxious I begin to feel.
I made writing a priority by making it a part of my everyday routine. Nearly every day, I write. Do I miss days? Absolutely. But I pick right up again the next day most of the time, and I’ve worked really hard to make writing a daily habit. I don’t blog daily, but most days, I write in books I’m working on.
How do you make writing a priority? You make it as much as a part of your day as eating a meal or taking in a deep breath. You find time every day, even if it’s just 5 minutes, to write, and you keep trying even when you fail, even when it’s tough.
I love old posts because they remind me of how far I’ve come, and how much I’ve grown and changed as a writer. Writing has now become a priority not just because I wanted it to be, but because I began to make it an everyday part of my life. It’s just what I do.
